A Progressive Tournament Design

Single-elimination, double-elimination, group stages (round-robin), best of 3.

Tournaments can have many formats. Multiple formats are often combined together. The goal of tournament design is to ultimately produce the “best winner”. Any tournament that has prizes for placing something other than first also needs to yield proper final rankings. Additionally, tournament design needs to provide an exciting competition for spectators.

There will never be a “Day[9] of DotA”

For those of you who don’t know, Sean “Day[9]” Plott is the most famous solo Starcraft 2 commentator. His boyish charisma, refreshing honesty, and extensive game knowledge put him miles ahead of anyone else (Tasteless & Artosis are great, but they fill a different role). He has created a lucrative career that most gamers dream of: watching, streaming, and commentating on Starcraft 2. Although there have been others in the past who have put food on the table through eSports commentating revenue, Day[9] has taken it to a whole new level. Starcraft 2 live streaming as a whole has evolved to a point that no other game has touched.
