What games would people be interested in? I'd buy the tabletop simulator on steam once I get a new computer if enough are interested; I've heard it's really good and you can play like any game

has anyone played this? idk where else to ask about a game like this
I played two games of this last night with the Widow's Walk expansion. Very, very fun and easy to learn. I was traitor the first game and one of the heroes the second game. Mechanics for both were fun and I like how the traitor mechanics work with the different win conditions, etc

new stuff we ran over the holidays

samurai - cool game. very simple and elegant mechanics. only got to play the 2 player variant. seems the game play would change for the better when the board is scaled up for 3 or 4. going first seems too strong in 2-player. going to try some of the variants that account for this and limit some of the first player hexes
patchwork - finally found someone that had this one. brilliant game. only got to play twice and really wanted to play more. is annoying if you play with someone that is tryharding and counting several turns ahead because it slows the game down considerably. probably gonna buy this one next time i see a good price on a canadian site.
secret hitler - kind of a reinterpretation of avalon. we played out avalon a bit too much so this was a nice breath of fresh air. managed to get a few 10-mans going that got really intense near the end. the randomly drawing cards part of the game kind of obfuscates the info you can get out of policies being played. game seem sort of hard for the liberals with certain group sizes if the fascists play it right. basically in 9-mans if one liberal gets killed the fascists can just vote down every government and just count on the random draws. term limits solves one of avalon's issues that would sometimes lead to blowouts for Arthur. a lot more random than avalon but in a good way imo.
codenames: pictures - new version of last years breakout. basically just codenames with pictures instead of words and a smaller 4x5 grid. wasn't a big fan of this one. i found the smaller grid just made the game easier. the pictures also aren't symmetric so it's annoying to have to take a close look at them if they are inverted whereas having the words upside down wasn't a big issue in the previous version. it's still codenames so it's great but definitely worse than the original.

Definitely think Secret Hitler is way more fun than Avalon. Different board set ups for different powers on certain spots could fix your problems with certain amounts of players

yeah think we're gonna try to figure out some variant when we have odd player counts.

    just ordered patchwork.

going to take a break from buying games but think my eventual next purchase will either be concordia or scythe.

some new stuff that my group has run recently.

bohnanza - old uwe rosenberg game. interesting to play. i feel like you can see some of his design principles in their infancy in this game but it's definitely super different than his modern games. the random and arbitrary starting conditions and rulesets for different player numbers always kinds of bugs me and seems like a super inelegant way of solving scaling group sizes. otherwise a pretty light card-based euro that is fun enough. has a catan-ey sort of trading phase which seems kind of love/hate for people.

deception: murder in hong kong - fun social deduction game. kind of a mix of avalon and codenames. haven't run it enough and generally my group prefers secret hitler for scratching this kind of itch but i really enjoyed it. the few games we did play it seemed kind of too easy for investigators so i want to try it with more clue cards to make it a bit tougher to play. haven't played the expansion but it looks like it'd be fun for bigger groups.

azul - bought this purely based on reviews and it getting super high ranked for an abstract on bgg. i dig it so far. i mostly don't give a shit about the theme and flavor in table tops so this is nice because its almost just purely drafting and placing tiles. gameplay is snappy and the decisions feel meaninful. have only played it with 4 players so far. feels like it fills a bit of a gap in my collection.

twilight struggle - have actually owned this for the longest time but the rulebook is a bit of a mess and the rules are somewhat complex and don't get a lot of opportunities to play 3-hour long two players games so it has been collecting dust. recently bought the steam version of this on a steam sale and have been playing against the AI to learn the game because i just find it to be an easier and more interactive way to figure out the different mechanics. once i figured it out i ran a few games irl the other day. generally i just avoid war games because they are all way too fucking long, with way too much dice rolling and everyone that plays them annoys me but surprisingly i really enjoyed this game. definitely worth the hype. might revisit the genre as a whole. the card based gameplay with the mix of ops and events is really clever and the game becomes really stressful and tense in the late war phase. still need to fine tune some strategy. seems like with some nut draws USSR just rapes europe early and it feels impossible to recover from which is annoying in a three hour game but i'm probably misplaying.

I tried tabletop sim a bit and noticed they have basically no rules coded in

For example, if you want to play chess, you have to pick up all the pieces off the ground one by one, place them all on the table, and then wait for an opponent to join the room who is going to play by the rules of chess and has the patience to place the pieces the right way on the board and shit

maybe that's not the case for all the games
