so i was talking to a chinese friend, who says that there are at least 30 million chinese players.

adding up the international player base, thats 40 million players give or take a few mill, which makes DOTA hands down the most popular game on the planet. In fact based on sales(so it could be a bit off) thats 3-4 times the player base of SC, WOW and LoL, all 3 with a player base of 11million each.

we dont know what valve is gonna do in china as far as distribution is concerned so this basically dont matter. we all know how much the chinese love piracy

unique concurrent viewers on a dota related website. And last time i was there it was scary the amount of people who knew about DOTA.

Anywho, nova- said that that number is the value "on the record" and in all honesty its much much higher than that

also, chinese kids love spending money on games especially shit like hats and crap people actually pay real money for that. It just depends if valve can get them hooked and if kids can buy it without a credit card. In china most game companies have those card things or you can charge to your cellphone and take credit from there since 90% of people are on prepaid

While I believe Dota is very popular worldwide, numbers without source are really whatever. The best we have is that IceFrog blog in 2010. I guess that alone speaks a lot for itself, but it's certainly not enough.

there's about 2/3 ppl that play dota in the philippines (ages 9-25) and that country has about 100 million people. Online isn't the only way you can play dota, in fact more people play in LAN's than online.

doesnt make a good competitive scene but gives incentives for sponsors to invest which is the reason why competitive scene can afford to exist

also dota2 isnt optimized for all kinds of pcs right? ya we still have a long way to go before general release 99% of people in PH/CN/singapore etc won't be able to play on the pcs at LAN shops there at where the game currently is
