now i've been flirting with the idea of switching programs to mathematics and minoring in like rhetoric or lit or something ridic 'useless' like film studies but i aint know if ill have a feel for higher level/abstract math since all i do is applied calc

I guess it would be easy to prove if you could say something about det (Id + tA) which might be possible from the fact that detA= detB ==> f_A=f_B.

no im in the us, but yes it sounds similar. and the small classes are great it feels like the high school learning environment. I hate taking my engineering classes because its 300 people in a lecture -_-

pure math at uoft is the exact opposite depending on the course. every question is a huge deviation. i guess it depends on the profs though. my best profs would give us extremely hard/thought-provoking assignments to ensure that when the exams hit "non-standard" problems were the norm.
