define f_A (i.e. f subscript A) by f_A(t) = det (Id+ tA) where A is an nxn matrix and t is any constant. Prove that f is differentiable everywhere, and prove that f'(0) = tr(A).
Hint: Observe that if A is similar to B then f_A = f_B
question from my linalg final. afaik nobody solved it within the time limit.

are the engineers terrible at math at your school too?
all the mech E's know how to do here is solve what i call canned problems
then on the exam theres a small deviation to standard shit and theyre all lost ...
then they graduate and get 80k starting and i get to live on 30k for 5 years weee

pure math at uoft is the exact opposite depending on the course. every question is a huge deviation. i guess it depends on the profs though. my best profs would give us extremely hard/thought-provoking assignments to ensure that when the exams hit "non-standard" problems were the norm.
